Final Project Evaluation

I’ve really enjoyed the project this term, a lot more than last term, as it’s been quicker paced and we’ve learnt a lot more.  Looking at the concept of Gothic Horror in both real life and fantasy has been really interesting.  I enjoyed looking at Great Expectations and the characters of Miss Havisham and Estella within that.  Creating those two characters allowed me to research into the Victorian era, which I found really interesting to find out all about their fashion, make-up and hairstyles.

I tried to keep my characters make-up true to the time, as this half of the project was period.  The continuity assessment for Miss Havisham was difficult, but it made me realise a lot about how important it is to make sure your notes and designs are clear, and that photographing your work will always help you when having to recreate looks in the future.  My Miss Havisham assessment went quite well, and I feel that I did the best I could when recreating it for a second time.
I was happy with the outcome of my Estella look as well, and I really enjoyed creating it, especially the hair design, as the make-up for her character was kept very simple in order to keep true to the time period.  The only problem with creating the periodic looks for these characters was that I didn’t feel that I could be that creative with them, without making them more contemporary.

The second half of this term’s project was about two gothic horror characters; Claudia and Quentin.  I enjoyed this a lot, as it allowed me to be more creative in designing my characters.  The research behind this part of the project was also really interesting, as I got to look into horror films and their characters, as well as real life horror that you hear about in the news.  In creating these characters, there was literally anything I could have done so it was fun trying out different ideas to find my desired effect.  This term I have also tried to portray more characteristics through my character’s hair and make-up designs.  I found this interesting to see how much you can actually imply through a person’s appearance and I enjoyed working in this way.

Learning all of the different hair and make-up techniques this term was also really fun, and I feel that I have learnt a lot more.  I really enjoyed learning all of the special effects side of things within make-up especially, and I feel confident in my abilities for the techniques needed to create the different effects that we learnt.  In hair, I really enjoyed looking at hair silhouettes and how these can be just as effective as the detail within the hair designs.
