The Make-Up Room: CUTS, BRUISES & THE PERFECT BLACK EYE

Equipment needed:
-       ‘Plasto’ moulding wax
-       Palette knife
-       Wound filler
-       Fake blood
-       Bruise wheel
-       Kryolan Sealer
-       Coffee granules
-       Vaseline

NOTES TO CONSIDER:
-       How long ago was the wound made?  How did they hurt themselves? Size/age of the wound?
-       Bruises come from within and out of the skin
-       Newer = brighter, older = darker
-       Use grease based products and mix with moisturizer to thin them and make them more workable
-       DO NOT add any liquid in the make-up chair, always add liquids when model is in position
-       Apply the cuts first, and then make-up the rest of them up
-       New black eye = red.  Old = darker/yellowy
-       Heavy bruising doesn’t usually go below the eye socket
-       If someone breaks their nose, they will have 2 black eyes
-       Vaseline makes it look swollen
-       NEVER powder wounds
-       Can use moulds to make wounds -> continuity purposes

How to CREATE BRUISES AND BLACK EYES:
-       REMEMBER: always work from photos of real black eyes/bruises
-       Start with the lightest, brightest colour of your palette
-       Apply with an eyeshadow brush in a blobbing motion and pat with your fingers to work it into the skin
-       NEVER SWEEP YOUR BRUSH
-       Make sure the colour goes right up to the lash lines and into the eye socket
-       Adding red to the eye waterline will make it look more sore
-       Using a lip brush (or just a smaller one), apply the darker colour and break up any hard edges with your finger
-       Add small amount of Vaseline under the lighter areas

How to CREATE CUTS:
-       Using a clean palette knife put the moulding wax on the back of your hand and break it down/melt it like butter
-       Apply a little bit of wax to the skin and blend down the edges using moisturizer
-       Keep building up the wax and blending away the edges
-       NOTE: if you want a deeper cut, add more wax in the middle and melt out at the sides
-       Wipe the palette knife clean, and cut into the wax with the edge of the palette knife, in the shape that you want the cut
-       Apply the sealer using a cotton bud to the whole of the wax area
-       Let it dry -> when it’s no longer sticky to touch
-       Apply a base over the top of the wax, being sure to match their skin tone and then powder it
-       Use the end of a hair grip to apply wound filler into the cut
-       Adding coffee ground into the wound will give it depth and you can add blood into the cut too
-       Using a stipple sponge for the fake blood will create the image of scratches/grazes

EVALUATION: I found this week’s seminar fun to do as it was a more creative area of make-up.  I really enjoyed learning how to create the bruising and cuts, and I found that it wasn’t too difficult, when copying the images of real bruises.
